Scotland Backs Hydrogen Future with £3.4 Million Investment in 11 Groundbreaking Projects
Scotland has taken a bold step forward in its journey toward a Net Zero future, announcing a £3.4 million investment across 11 domestic hydrogen projects aimed at boosting production, storage, and transportation capabilities across the country.
The funding is part of a broader strategy to establish hydrogen as a key driver of Scotland’s clean energy transition and economic growth. Acting Net Zero Cabinet Secretary Gillian Martin emphasised the importance of hydrogen, calling it “one of Scotland’s greatest industrial opportunities since the discovery of oil and gas in the North Sea.”
Leading the pack is Green Cat Hydrogen, which secured nearly £500,000 for its Creca Hydrogen Facility in Dumfries and Galloway. Positioned beside Chapelcross, this facility is projected to produce over 4,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, making it a significant contributor to the country’s low-carbon ambitions.
Green Cat Hydrogen also received funding for two additional projects:
- Strathallan Hydrogen (£320,549)
- Binn Ecopark Hydrogen (£258,478)
Meanwhile, Protium Green Solutions was awarded £450,619 for its Hydrogen Island project in South Lanarkshire, reinforcing the widespread geographic reach of Scotland’s hydrogen development efforts.
- Cromarty Hydrogen Phase 2 – Muir of Ord (£290,155)
- Cromarty Hydrogen Phase 2 – Longman (£238,400)
These projects represent a diverse and strategic investment across Scotland, targeting both rural and urban regions, and leveraging the nation’s rich renewable energy potential.
This funding round underlines Scotland’s commitment not only to decarbonisation but also to positioning itself as a leader in the emerging hydrogen economy. By nurturing these early-stage projects, the government aims to create a resilient, low-carbon infrastructure that delivers long-term environmental and economic benefits.
As the world looks for scalable clean energy solutions, Scotland is showing how innovation, investment, and policy alignment can lead the way toward a sustainable future.
