Uniper Unveils Ambitious Hydrogen Hub Project in the Humber, UK

Uniper, a global energy company, has set its sights on revolutionising the energy landscape with its latest venture: the Humber H2ub® project. This ambitious initiative, slated to be operational by 2029, aims to establish a hydrogen hub at the Killingholme site in the Humber region of the United Kingdom. With a commitment to sustainability and innovation, Uniper's project holds the promise of significant advancements in green hydrogen production and decarbonisation efforts.

At the heart of the Humber H2ub® project lies a plan to integrate 120MW of green hydrogen production capacity, with potential for further expansion. This forward-looking approach aligns with Uniper's broader vision to scale up its electrolyser capacity to over 1GW across its operations by 2030. By harnessing the power of green hydrogen, Uniper seeks to drive down emissions and pave the way for a cleaner, more sustainable future.

Through a strategic agreement with Phillips 66 Limited, Uniper aims to supply green hydrogen to the Humber Refinery starting in 2029. This partnership underscores the shared commitment to reducing Scope 1 operational emissions and fostering environmental stewardship within the energy sector.

Duncan Hammond, Humber's Decarbonisation Projects Manager at Phillips 66 Limited, emphasised the transformative potential of hydrogen refuelling in lowering the refinery's emissions. He highlighted the critical role of technologies like low-carbon hydrogen and carbon capture in ensuring energy security for the UK while meeting the needs of the transport sector and supply chain.

Guy Phillips, Team Lead of Business Development Hydrogen at Uniper UK, expressed optimism about the Killingholme site's potential to support the UK's hydrogen and decarbonisation objectives. Leveraging existing utilities infrastructure and strategic location within the Humber region's industrial cluster, the project aims to create new high-skilled employment opportunities and bolster the regional economy.

The significance of the Killingholme site cannot be overstated. With its robust infrastructure, including grid connections, demineralised water, and cooling systems from existing power plants, the site is poised to play a pivotal role in Uniper's hydrogen hub ambitions. Moreover, Uniper's broader strategy of establishing "Energy Transformation Hubs" across Europe underscores its commitment to driving innovation and sustainability at scale.

Uniper's track record of innovation extends beyond the UK. With Energy Transformation Hubs already operational in Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden, the company is at the forefront of driving decarbonisation efforts across Europe. Notably, Uniper's hydrogen hub project in Wilhelmshaven, Germany, unveiled in 2021, holds the potential to meet 10% of the country's hydrogen demand, further solidifying its position as a leader in the transition to clean energy.
