Amazon Launches First Electric Cargo Bike Deliveries in Norwich with New Micromobility Hub
Amazon has officially started its first electric cargo bike deliveries in Norwich, marking a significant step towards sustainable urban logistics. This new initiative follows the opening of a micromobility hub at Amazon’s delivery station in Norfolk. The hub, which now houses a fleet of electric cargo bikes, is set to deliver thousands of packages every week, replacing traditional delivery vans on city centre roads. This move is part of Amazon's broader £300 million investment to electrify and decarbonise its UK transportation network.
The new electric cargo bikes in Norwich are expected to make a considerable impact on the city’s air quality and traffic congestion. By reducing the number of vans on the road, Amazon is not only contributing to cleaner air but also helping to alleviate the strain on urban infrastructure. Norwich now joins over 40 other cities across the UK and Europe where Amazon has introduced micromobility hubs to facilitate eco-friendly deliveries.
Connor Ashford, Senior Delivery Station Manager at Amazon in Norwich, expressed his excitement about the new fleet. “Our new electric cargo bikes are part of Amazon’s commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions across our operations by 2040, ten years ahead of the Paris Agreement. This is a proud moment for our team, and great news for customers across the city who will benefit from zero-emissions deliveries to their door,” Ashford said.
Amazon’s efforts in Norwich are supported by local courier company Danzen Logistics, which provides delivery services to Amazon customers in the area. Dan Zenchuk, owner of Danzen Logistics, shared his enthusiasm for the partnership. “We are delighted to work with Amazon to bring this fleet of electric cargo bikes to Norwich. We think the electric cargo bikes are going to be a big hit with customers, while also supporting Amazon’s sustainability commitments and providing additional delivery rider opportunities in the area,” Zenchuk remarked.
Amazon’s introduction of electric cargo bikes in Norwich is part of a broader strategy to decarbonise its delivery operations across the UK. The company has already deployed more than 1,000 electric delivery vans across the UK and Ireland, in addition to nine fully electric heavy goods vehicles—the first in Amazon’s fleet—to replace traditional lorries. These initiatives are in line with Amazon’s commitment as the co-founder and first signatory of The Climate Pledge, a commitment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.
Globally, Amazon is recognised as a leader in renewable energy. In 2023, the company matched all the electricity consumed by its operations, including its data centres, with 100% renewable energy—a significant achievement seven years ahead of its 2030 goal. As the largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy globally and in the UK, Amazon has made significant investments in both on-site solar projects and large-scale offsite renewable energy projects. In the UK alone, Amazon has 29 operational on-site solar projects and seven large-scale offsite renewable energy projects, which are expected to generate enough energy to power more than one million UK homes annually once fully operational.
The Norwich delivery station, which opened in September 2016, plays a crucial role in Amazon’s operations, powering the last mile of the order process and ensuring speedy deliveries to customers. The station employs over a hundred permanent employees who work to process customer orders and load them into delivery vehicles, now including the new electric cargo bikes.
Amazon’s move to introduce electric cargo bikes in Norwich is a clear indication of the company’s commitment to sustainable urban logistics. By investing in micromobility hubs and electric delivery vehicles, Amazon is not only enhancing its delivery network but also contributing to the broader effort to combat climate change. As the company continues to expand its fleet of electric vehicles and renewable energy projects, it sets a powerful example for other businesses to follow in the pursuit of a more sustainable future.
