Stagecoach Boosts Zero-Emission Fleet with 41 New Electric Buses from Alexander Dennis

In a significant move towards sustainable public transportation, Stagecoach has announced the acquisition of 41 new electric buses for routes operated for Transport for London (TfL) next year. This order includes 24 small Enviro100EV buses and 17 double-decker Enviro400EV buses, both designed and manufactured by Alexander Dennis, a leading UK bus manufacturer.

Advancing Safety and Efficiency Standards

The newly purchased buses align with the latest iteration of TfL’s Bus Safety Standard, reflecting a commitment to safer and more efficient public transportation. Alexander Dennis stands out as the first manufacturer to receive positive results from independent impact testing of their buses' revised front geometry. This innovative design enhances the protection of vulnerable road users and improves direct vision for drivers, marking a notable advancement in urban bus safety.

Next-Generation Electric Buses: Specifications and Capabilities

The next-generation Enviro400EV double-decker, designed specifically for London, measures 10.5 meters in length and can accommodate up to 62 seated passengers. This model exemplifies the fusion of capacity and efficiency, making it ideal for the bustling routes of the UK capital.

On the other hand, the Enviro100EV, often referred to as the “big small bus,” is tailored to meet the needs of narrower residential streets. With a compact 8.5-meter length and a narrow 2.35-meter width, this bus offers 21 seats, providing a nimble yet capacious solution for urban environments.

Both models boast impressive energy efficiency, with the Enviro400EV achieving 0.67kWh/km and the Enviro100EV achieving 0.54kWh/km over the UK Bus Cycle. Their warrantable energy throughput stands at up to 1.6GWh and 1.2GWh respectively, underscoring their potential for extended service with reduced operating costs.

Industry Leaders on the New Fleet

Ben Werth, Group Sales and Business Development Manager for Alexander Dennis, expressed his enthusiasm for the deal, stating, “This new order further confirms the incredible success of our next-generation vehicle platform, which we’ve designed in-house from the ground up to drive value for the UK bus industry through efficiency, longevity and flexibility.” Werth highlighted the potential of the electric drive system to last two full TfL route contract terms without needing a battery replacement, emphasising the long-term cost efficiency of the new buses.

Nick Owen, Director of Buses at TfL, remarked on London's pioneering role in zero-emission public transportation: “London has the largest zero-emission bus fleet in Western Europe, with more than 1,400 buses, and we look forward to welcoming these 41 new Alexander Dennis electric buses on our routes. When the entire fleet is zero-emission, we will have saved around 5m tonnes of carbon.” Owen also noted the contribution of these buses to meeting TfL’s Bus Safety Standards and supporting UK jobs throughout their production stages.

Paul Lynch, Managing Director of Stagecoach London, expressed optimism about the new additions to the fleet, stating, “We’re looking forward to operating these buses which promise a step forward in range and longevity. They add to our rapidly growing electric bus fleet as we play our part in delivering TfL and the Mayor’s targets for London, as well as our own Stagecoach commitments on carbon reduction.”

A Step Towards a Greener Future

This order marks a significant milestone in Stagecoach’s efforts to expand its electric bus fleet and underscores a broader commitment to sustainability in public transportation. The introduction of these next-generation electric buses not only supports TfL’s ambitious environmental goals but also ensures safer, more efficient travel for passengers across London. As these buses hit the roads next year, they will represent a tangible step towards a greener, more sustainable urban transport network.
