BP and Aberdeen City Council have made a significant leap in their commitment to sustainable energy by reaching a final investment decision on the construction of a green hydrogen hub. The project, set to begin production in 2026, represents a critical advancement in Aberdeen’s efforts to transition to a low-carbon economy.

A Joint Venture for a Sustainable Future

The new venture, named bp Aberdeen Hydrogen Energy, marks a collaboration between the oil and gas giant and the local council. The partnership aims to build a hydrogen production facility with an annual capacity of 300 tonnes, specifically designed to fuel vehicles operating within the city. This ambitious project is poised to make Aberdeen a leader in hydrogen technology and infrastructure.

Infrastructure and Energy Integration

Central to the hub’s development will be a comprehensive hydrogen production, storage, and distribution facility. To ensure the production process is entirely green, a new solar farm will be constructed. This solar installation is expected to generate approximately 1.63 MW of electricity, which will power the electrolysis process needed for hydrogen production. Ian Yuill, Co-Leader of Aberdeen City Council, emphasised the project’s importance, stating that it is "central" to the council’s vision of increasing both hydrogen supply and demand. This initiative is expected to create a positive feedback loop, encouraging further adoption of hydrogen technologies and stimulating local and regional economies.

BP’s Commitment to Low-Carbon Energy

BP’s involvement in the Aberdeen hydrogen hub is part of its broader strategy to support the energy transition. Louise Kingham, BP’s Senior Vice-President for Europe, praised the city council’s efforts, noting that they deserve a "huge amount of credit" for advancing their low-carbon energy plans. Kingham highlighted that for BP, this project is a clear demonstration of their commitment to backing Britain’s current and future energy needs.

Earlier this year, BP’s CEO, Murray Auchincloss, indicated that while the company’s immediate focus would be on blue hydrogen production throughout the 2020s, they anticipate a shift towards green hydrogen closer to 2030.
