Alexander Dennis Secures Record Order from Stagecoach for Zero-Emission Buses

In a significant milestone for sustainable public transportation, global bus manufacturer Alexander Dennis has announced a record-breaking order from transport group Stagecoach for 244 next-generation zero-emission buses. This order marks the largest single commitment to zero-emission buses in the company’s history, underscoring the industry's shift towards greener alternatives.

A Historic Partnership for Sustainability

Stagecoach has been instrumental in supporting numerous local authorities across England in their successful bids to the UK Government’s Zero-Emission Regional Bus Areas (ZEBRA) scheme, particularly in the second round (ZEBRA 2). Following the successful funding awards, Stagecoach has leveraged this support to place the substantial order with Alexander Dennis.

The Fleet Expansion

The order includes 180 new Enviro400EV double deckers, which will be joining similar vehicles currently being delivered and commissioned from an earlier ZEBRA 1 funding round. The Enviro400EV is renowned for its energy efficiency, boasting a consumption rate of just 0.67kWh/km over the UK Bus Cycle. With its 472kWh batteries and a class-leading warrantable energy throughput of up to 1.6GWh, it presents an attractive total cost of ownership proposition for transport operators.

In addition to the double deckers, Stagecoach has also ordered 54 Enviro200EV single deckers in lengths of 10.9m and 11.7m. This marks the first order for Alexander Dennis’s new integral single decker model, set to launch next year. This new model is designed to complement the existing range of next-generation electric buses, providing a versatile option for various transit needs.

Delivery Timeline

All buses, including the Enviro400EV, Enviro200EV, and Enviro100EV models ordered with ZEBRA 2 funding, are scheduled for delivery to Stagecoach’s operating companies across England during 2025 and 2026. This strategic rollout aims to enhance Stagecoach’s zero-emission fleet efficiently and sustainably.

Leadership Perspectives

Paul Davies, President and Managing Director of Alexander Dennis, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “We are particularly delighted that Stagecoach will benefit from our platform approach to vehicle development, which maximises the number of common parts and solutions across all three vehicle types to make them easy to drive and maintain. Our Enviro100EV ‘big small bus,’ the new Enviro200EV all-rounder, and the crowd-shifting Enviro400EV double decker will be driving value together through efficiency, longevity, and flexibility.”

Claire Miles, Chief Executive Officer for Stagecoach, echoed this excitement, emphasising Stagecoach’s commitment to sustainability: “We’re excited to place the largest electric vehicle order to date for Alexander Dennis with these 244 new vehicles, which reflect Stagecoach’s commitment to transition to a zero-emission bus fleet. We will continue to build on our work to tackle climate change and connect communities across the UK sustainably and efficiently.”

In Summary

This landmark order not only highlights the growing demand for zero-emission public transport solutions but also sets a new benchmark for collaboration between transportation providers and manufacturers. As these new buses hit the roads in the coming years, they will play a crucial role in reducing emissions and promoting sustainable urban mobility across the UK.
