Osprey Charging Secures Site for Scotland's Largest Ultra-Rapid EV Charging Hub

Osprey Charging, a leading provider of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, has announced the acquisition of a freehold site in Paisley, Glasgow. This site will host the largest ultra-rapid EV charging hub in Scotland, a significant milestone in Osprey’s mission to expand the availability of convenient and reliable public EV charging across the UK.

A Strategic Location for EV Charging

Strategically located opposite the Phoenix Retail Park on the A737, and in close proximity to the M8 motorway and Glasgow Airport, the new Paisley hub is set to feature 16 ultra-rapid chargers. Construction is scheduled to begin in the summer, with the opening planned for early 2025. The hub’s location near local amenities, such as the Showcase Cinema and McDonald’s drive-thru, will provide added convenience for drivers who expect facilities during their charging stops.

Supporting Scotland’s EV Infrastructure

This development aligns with Osprey’s ongoing efforts to enhance public EV charging infrastructure throughout the UK. The Paisley hub will play a crucial role in supporting the UK Government's goal to increase the number of EV chargers, addressing the recent shortfall in meeting rapid charging targets.

Ian Johnston, CEO of Osprey Charging, expressed enthusiasm about the project: “We’re hugely excited to have completed the purchase of the land for our forthcoming 16-charger ultra-rapid hub in Paisley, which marks our second freehold site in the UK. The purchase of freehold sites is an important strategy for Osprey, as it enables us to build larger public charging locations with greater flexibility over their design. This hub will be crucial in supporting the uptake of EVs in Scotland as well as in meeting growing demand for reliable, accessible, and high-quality EV charging across the UK.”

Expansion and Future Goals

The Paisley hub is Osprey’s largest venture in Scotland and follows the acquisition of another freehold site in Devon last year. Ownership of the land provides greater design flexibility, allowing Osprey to optimise the layout and functionality of their charging hubs.

In 2024, Osprey has successfully delivered nine high-powered hubs across various UK locations. The new Paisley hub represents a significant milestone in their rapidly expanding network. Johnston further stated, “As the year progresses, our goal is to complete 30 hubs, which will be a monumental stride not only in the advancement of our network but also in fortifying the broader public EV charging infrastructure.”

A Debate on Charging Strategies

The Paisley hub’s proximity to retail and dining amenities feeds into a broader debate on the future of EV charging strategies. Should the focus be on rapid charging or destination charging? This debate was a key topic at the recent Powered On Live 2024 event, highlighting the evolving expectations of EV drivers regarding the convenience and accessibility of charging facilities.

In Conclusion

Osprey Charging’s new ultra-rapid hub in Paisley marks a significant step forward in the expansion of EV infrastructure in Scotland and the UK. By providing reliable, high-quality charging options in strategic locations, Osprey is not only supporting the transition to electric vehicles but also contributing to the broader goal of sustainable and accessible transportation. The upcoming Paisley hub stands as a testament to their commitment to innovation and excellence in EV charging solutions.
