TG Lynes Pioneers Sustainable Transport with Electric Truck Introduction in London
Enfield-based TG Lynes, a prominent supplier of heating, plumbing, and air movement materials, has become one of the first businesses to operate a 7.5-tonne electric truck on the streets of London. This bold move marks a significant milestone in the company's ongoing commitment to sustainability and green transport solutions.
TG Lynes has invested in a UK-manufactured Tevva battery-electric truck to carry out local deliveries across the capital. This investment positions TG Lynes as a leader in the adoption of sustainable transport technology. The introduction of fully electric 7.5-tonne trucks into mass production is a recent development, with only a few currently operating within London.
Heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs) such as these trucks are particularly significant in the context of environmental impact. Despite representing just two percent of vehicles on the roads, HDVs contribute to over a quarter of road transport emissions. Addressing this disparity is crucial for achieving broader environmental goals.
Andrew Ingram, Managing Director of TG Lynes, expressed pride in the company's forward-thinking approach. “We are delighted to take ownership of this state-of-the-art Tevva truck, which is the next step in our journey towards achieving the ultimate goal of net zero,” said Ingram. He emphasised the importance of businesses adopting electric commercial vehicles, noting that while electric passenger cars are becoming commonplace, electric commercial vehicle sales are still lagging. “As HDVs make up a significant amount of all emissions, it’s vital more businesses consider making the switch,” he added.
Ingram also highlighted the company’s support for British manufacturing through their purchase from Tevva, and reiterated TG Lynes' commitment to continually seek ways to minimise their environmental impact. The Tevva 7.5-tonne battery-electric truck, which boasts a range of up to 140 miles (227 kilometres) on a single charge of its 105 kWh battery, represents a significant advancement in sustainable transport.
Tevva’s 7.5-tonne truck is one of only three electric vehicles in its weight class to have secured government plug-in truck grant (PITrG) eligibility, underlining its innovative design and performance capabilities. Tevva’s Business Operations Director, Kay Jarvis, stressed the importance of reducing air pollution caused by road transport, particularly HDVs, which are a major source of air pollution leading to 350,000 premature deaths annually in Europe. Jarvis noted the growing demand for electric trucks, stating, “We have been inundated with requests for our 7.5t battery-electric truck since going into full production.”
The electric truck is part of TG Lynes' broader strategy to achieve net zero emissions. Last year, the company introduced low-carbon Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) vehicles to its 18-tonne fleet, which are 90 percent more carbon efficient. These vehicles service sites across London, the South East, East Anglia, and the Midlands. Additionally, TG Lynes installed a 10,000-litre HVO tank at its base for convenient on-site refuelling and added a new electric drop-side van to its fleet.
Furthermore, TG Lynes has taken significant steps in reducing its carbon footprint by installing a 110 kW solar system on the roof of its headquarters, generating over 50 percent of the energy required for its operations. Andrew Ingram emphasised that sustainability at TG Lynes extends beyond mere compliance. “From fuel combustion to being sustainable when purchasing electricity and recycling to choosing ethical suppliers, we are taking decisive action to ensure we are doing everything we can to lower our impact on the environment. Sustainability is not just a buzzword for TG Lynes – it has authenticity.”
TG Lynes continues to set industry standards, supplying thousands of products including valves, steel and copper tubes and fittings, press systems, composite and plastic plumbing, drainage solutions, support systems, and tooling. Their extensive plant hire service complements their product offerings, further cementing their role as a leader in the industry while paving the way for a greener future.
