Intelligent Energy Unveils Revolutionary Hydrogen Fuel Cell System
Intelligent Energy (IE), a prominent hydrogen fuel cell manufacturer, has introduced a groundbreaking hydrogen fuel cell system that is set to revolutionise the passenger car market. The new system, boasting unmatched power and compactness, marks a significant step towards a global, zero-emission future for the automotive sector.
Hydrogen fuel cells are emerging as a viable solution to some of the major challenges faced by Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), such as reliance on finite natural resources, limitations in electric grid capacity, long battery charging times, and restricted vehicle range. Moreover, fuel cells offer the potential to be as cost-effective to produce as internal combustion engines (ICE), utilising recycled and recyclable materials in their manufacturing process.
The newly unveiled IE-DRIVE™ single stack platform by Intelligent Energy was showcased in the UK, demonstrating its capabilities by powering an SUV from Changan Automobile. This innovative platform offers several advantages over existing fuel cells from major automotive manufacturers and their third-party suppliers:
- Increased Power: The IE-DRIVE™ platform delivers 157kW of gross electrical power, surpassing any other single stack fuel cell application currently available for passenger cars.
- Compact Design: Leveraging Intelligent Energy's patented direct water injection technology, the DRIVE's heat exchanger is up to 30% smaller than those of its competitors. This reduction in size does not compromise performance and allows for a more compact integration into vehicles
- Simplified System: The direct water injection system eliminates the need for a humidifier, reducing the overall component count and simplifying the bill of materials. This novel approach streamlines the fuel cell system, making it more efficient and easier to produce.
- Turnkey Solution: The IE-DRIVE™ is designed as a complete turnkey system, mirroring the shape and installation requirements of traditional engines. It includes the fuel cell stack, electronic control unit, heat exchanger, and Balance of Plant (BoP), meeting the low bonnet requirements of modern passenger cars.
- Cost-Effectiveness: Under conditions of full-scale, high-volume manufacturing, Intelligent Energy projects that the IE-DRIVE™ will cost approximately $115 to $125 per kW by the end of the decade. This pricing makes it more affordable than BEV solutions and competitive with traditional ICEs.
Intelligent Energy is now poised to introduce this advanced technology to the passenger car market in collaboration with suitable automotive manufacturers. David Woolhouse, Chief Executive of Intelligent Energy, expressed his optimism about the future of hydrogen fuel cell powertrains. "With 25% of passenger cars expected to have hydrogen fuel cell powertrains, this clean technology represents the future. As an independent and IATF-compliant tier 1 supplier, I'm proud we have developed a breakthrough solution that can open up the market for passenger car manufacturers needing to integrate a more powerful system into their vehicles," he said.
Intelligent Energy is at the forefront of hydrogen fuel cell innovation, addressing the limitations of traditional battery-powered systems. The privately-owned company holds over 600 patents and has been pioneering advancements for more than two decades across various sectors, including automotive, aerospace, power generation, telecommunications, materials handling, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
Intelligent Energy’s new IE-DRIVE™ platform represents a significant leap forward in the quest for sustainable automotive solutions. By providing a powerful, compact, and cost-effective hydrogen fuel cell system, the company is paving the way for a future where zero-emission vehicles are the norm. This advancement not only aligns with global environmental goals but also offers a practical and commercially viable alternative to both BEVs and traditional ICEs.
