Celebrating Innovation: Commercial Fuel Solutions at the Hydrogen UK Awards

Recently, a significant milestone for the hydrogen industry in the United Kingdom was marked as Commercial Fuel Solutions proudly participated in the first ever Hydrogen UK Awards. The event brought together a host of industry leaders and innovators to recognise and celebrate the outstanding contributions driving the advancement of the UK's hydrogen sector.

Hosted at the National Conference Centre (NCC) in Birmingham, the awards ceremony was a highlight of the Hydrogen UK Annual Conference. Amongst the excitement and anticipation, seven awards were presented, spanning various categories including transport, industrial applications, infrastructure, and, notably, innovation.

As sponsors of the first award of the evening, Commercial Fuel Solutions had the privilege of presenting the Innovation Award to Centrica and HiiROC, a company making waves with its groundbreaking deployment of a Thermal Plasma Electrolysis (TPE) unit at Brigg. This pioneering project is instrumental in producing low-carbon 'emerald' hydrogen, setting a new standard for sustainability in the industry.

At Commercial Fuel Solutions, innovation lies at the core of their ethos, propelling them to develop cutting-edge refuelling systems that are both efficient and safe. The partnership between Centrica and HiiROC, which was recognised with the Innovation Award, exemplifies this commitment to innovation. Together, they have successfully advanced HiiROC technology to the large-scale demonstration stage, with plans to inject hydrogen produced through the process at a gas peaking plant in Lincolnshire.

HiiROC's revolutionary technology stands out for its ability to convert biomethane, flare gas, or natural gas into clean hydrogen and carbon black through a plasma electrolysis process. This process not only contributes to the reduction of carbon emissions but also demonstrates the versatility and scalability of hydrogen production methods.

The judges lauded the partnership between Centrica and HiiROC for its potential to support local usage of hydrogen across the UK, emphasising its widespread applicability. Such recognition underscores the pivotal role that collaboration and innovation play in driving the hydrogen industry forward.

The achievements celebrated at the Hydrogen UK Awards serve as a testament to the dynamic innovation taking place within the hydrogen sector today. As we reflect on the successes of the past year, we eagerly anticipate the advancements and groundbreaking technologies that lie ahead. The future of hydrogen holds immense promise, and events like the Hydrogen UK Awards provide a platform to celebrate and champion the remarkable progress being made towards a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.
