Glasgow Airport: Pioneering the Future of Flight with Hydrogen Innovation

In a significant stride towards sustainable aviation, Glasgow Airport is spearheading an ambitious project to establish a hydrogen hub with the potential to support zero-emission flights by 2027. This groundbreaking initiative, led by a consortium comprising Glasgow Airport and net-zero consulting co-developer Ikigai Group, received funding from the Scottish government's Hydrogen Innovation Scheme, demonstrating a commitment to advancing renewable hydrogen technologies.

The Glasgow Airport Hydrogen Innovation Hub consortium, formed in May 2023, has been tasked with conducting a feasibility study to identify optimal solutions for hydrogen production, storage, and refuelling infrastructure. The interim results of this study, unveiled at the recent Glasgow Airport Hydrogen Innovation Hub summit, indicate promising progress. With the development phase slated to commence in 2024, the consortium aims to have the hub operational by 2027, paving the way for a new era of sustainable air travel.

A key aspect of the project is its potential for replication not only at other AGS Airports but also on a global scale. Helena Anderson, co-founder of Ikigai, emphasises the pivotal role of airports as multi-modal energy hubs and praises Glasgow's suitability for pioneering such a project. By leveraging renewable energy sources and strategic partnerships, the feasibility study demonstrates the commercial viability of green hydrogen, setting a precedent for sustainable aviation solutions.

The consortium's composition reflects a diverse range of expertise, with participation from organisations such as H2GO Power, Ricardo, and ZeroAvia, among others.
