EET Hydrogen and UK Government Partner to Propel Hydrogen Economy Forward

EET Hydrogen, a leading player in the green energy sector, has announced a significant agreement with the UK Government's Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. This collaboration marks a crucial step in the development of the UK's hydrogen economy and underscores the commitment to combatting climate change.

The agreement revolves around EET Hydrogen's flagship project, the HPPI low-carbon hydrogen plant, slated to commence construction later this year. The signing of the statement of principles between EET Hydrogen and the UK Government represents a pivotal moment in the negotiations, setting the stage for final discussions aimed at solidifying the partnership.

With an initial production capacity of 350MW, the HPPI plant is poised to make a substantial impact, capturing approximately 600,000 tonnes of CO2 annually. This achievement is tantamount to removing around 250,000 cars from the roads each year, significantly reducing carbon emissions and advancing towards a cleaner, greener future.

The significance of this milestone extends beyond environmental benefits. The HPPI plant is set to become a cornerstone of the HyNet Cluster, a vital initiative in the UK's hydrogen industry. EET Hydrogen's ambitious goal of developing 4GW of low carbon hydrogen by 2030 aligns perfectly with the nation's objectives for sustainable energy production and emissions reduction.

One of the key outcomes of the HPPI project is the provision of hydrogen to industrial businesses across the North West of England. By decarbonising their operations, these businesses will not only contribute to environmental preservation but also safeguard jobs and foster economic growth in the region. This project's role in bolstering the HyNet cluster is indispensable, laying the groundwork for future developments and establishing the UK as a leader in the hydrogen sector.

Lord Callanan, Minister for Energy Efficiency and Green Finance, emphasised the pivotal role of hydrogen in the UK's journey towards net zero emissions. He stated, "Hydrogen will play a vital role in the UK's journey towards net zero by providing businesses large and small with cleaner energy in the future." The government's commitment to final negotiations with the HPPI project underscores its ambition to expand low-carbon hydrogen production capacity, potentially supporting up to 12,000 jobs by 2030.

Tony Fountain, Managing Partner of EET, expressed his satisfaction with the agreement, highlighting the importance of scaling hydrogen capacity to decarbonise heavy industries. He remarked, "Scaling hydrogen capacity is essential to decarbonising heavy industries. This is an important step in our ambitious decarbonisation plan to transform our business and the North West."

CEO of EET Hydrogen, Joe Seifert, echoed Fountain's sentiments, emphasising the significance of the milestone for both EET Hydrogen and the broader hydrogen sector in the UK. He stated, "This is a critical milestone for EET Hydrogen and the hydrogen sector in the UK. We are very proud to be leading the way and look forward to starting construction later this year."
