London Ambulance Service Launches First Fully Electric Ambulance: A Milestone Towards Net Zero Emissions

In a groundbreaking move towards sustainability and eco-friendly emergency services, the London Ambulance Service rolled out its first fully electric ambulance on New Year's Eve. This initiative is part of the service's broader commitment to achieving a net-zero fleet, not only reducing operational costs but also contributing to improved air quality for Londoners.

The Features of the Electric Ambulance

These state-of-the-art electric ambulances are designed with cutting-edge features aimed at enhancing both operational efficiency and patient care. The vehicles boast a lightweight design and incorporate accessibility features for the ambulance crews. Notable features include a powered trolley bed system, a powered carry chair, and an integrated scanning system that ensures the ambulance remains fully stocked after each patient is treated.

Collaboration with Hospitals

Recognising the importance of seamless operations, the London Ambulance Service has collaborated with prominent hospitals, including Guys and St Thomas' Hospital and Kings College Hospital. Together, they are working to provide high-powered electric vehicle charging ports at hospitals, allowing ambulance crews to conveniently charge their vehicles between emergency responses. Additionally, the service has already installed 56 charging stations at ambulance stations for electric vehicles.

Scale of the Electric Fleet

The fully electric ambulances mark the latest addition to the country's largest emergency fleet of fully electric vehicles. Currently, the fleet includes 42 fully electric fast-response cars and three electric motorcycles. In total, there are 160 zero-emission capable vehicles in the fleet. The London Ambulance Service aims to deliver four more fully electric ambulances this year, with plans to further expand its electric ambulance fleet starting from April 2024.

Innovative Partnership with Ford

The London Ambulance Service has partnered with Ford, making it the first original equipment manufacturer to supply a base vehicle for the creation of fully electric ambulances. Specialist converters, WAS, then transformed these base vehicles into the groundbreaking electric ambulances. The initiative marks a significant step towards integrating sustainable practices in emergency healthcare services.

Pilot Program and Data Collection

These electric ambulances are the first batch of twelve that will be piloted by NHS England's Net Zero Travel and Transport team in collaboration with the London Ambulance Service and four other ambulance trusts. This pilot program aims to collect valuable "real-life" data, which will play a crucial role in shaping the broader rollout of zero-emission emergency ambulances in the future.

Leadership Acknowledgment

Daniel Elkeles, Chief Executive at London Ambulance Service, expressed the significance of this milestone, calling it a "game-changer for ambulance designs across the world." Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, applauded the initiative, emphasising the positive impact on patient care, air quality improvement, and the reduction of harmful emissions. Khan also highlighted his ambitious goal for London to achieve net zero carbon by 2030.
