London's Ambitious Move Towards a Greener Future: Ultra-Rapid EV Charging Hubs Coming Soon

In a groundbreaking initiative to accelerate London's transition to sustainable transportation, Places for London – Transport for London's (TfL) property company – has embarked on a quest for a strategic joint venture partner. The primary goal of this partnership is to establish a network of cutting-edge electric vehicle (EV) ultra-rapid charging hubs across the city, aligning with the Mayor of London's ambitious Net Zero carbon commitment by 2030.

London stands at the forefront of the United Kingdom's electric vehicle revolution, with an impressive 142,000 plug-in electric cars and vans already registered in the capital. Boasting over 18,300 charge points, London currently commands more than a third of the entire EV charging infrastructure in the UK. Places for London's initiative seeks to build upon this leadership by strategically placing ultra-rapid charging hubs throughout the city.

The initial phase of this groundbreaking project identifies five key locations, each strategically chosen to maximize accessibility and impact. These sites include Hanger Lane, Canning Town, Hatton Cross Tube station, Tottenham Hale, and Hillingdon Circus. Together, these locations are expected to deliver a minimum of six publicly accessible ultra-rapid charging bays, ensuring that drivers can recharge their vehicles in approximately half an hour. This not only encourages EV adoption but also addresses the growing demand for efficient charging infrastructure.

Places for London is actively seeking a joint venture partner with a proven track record in the EV charging sector, capable of designing, building, and operating industry-leading charging hubs. The partnership aims to not only facilitate the Mayor's commitment to Net Zero but also contribute to placemaking in local areas by incorporating retail and welfare facilities on larger sites. By establishing a long-term joint venture, Places for London can directly influence the design and delivery of these hubs while generating sustainable revenue for future investments in the transport network.

London's Deputy Mayor for Transport, Seb Dance, expresses enthusiasm for the project, stating that the joint venture for ultra-rapid charging hubs will make electric vehicle adoption more convenient for both individuals and businesses. Mark Farrow, Director of Strategy and Planning at Places for London, emphasises the hubs' role in encouraging the transition to electric vehicles and generating revenue for broader sustainable transport initiatives.

The Licensed Taxi Drivers' Association, represented by General Secretary Steve McNamara, acknowledges the importance of convenient, rapid charging points for taxi drivers. McNamara sees these hubs as a crucial step forward in supporting the iconic black cabs' transition to green technology, meeting growing demand and contributing to London's sustainability goals.

Places for London's initiative to establish EV ultra-rapid charging hubs marks a significant leap towards a cleaner, greener, and healthier London. With the search for a joint venture partner underway and strategic locations identified, the project not only supports current EV users but also anticipates the growing demand for sustainable transportation.
