Coca-Cola Europacific Partners and Ball Beverage Packing Begin 12 Month HVO Trial
Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (CCEP) and Ball Beverage Packaging, a prominent aluminium can manufacturer, have initiated a 12-month trial involving the use of HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) as a partial fuel source for vehicles at Ball's Wakefield facility. This year-long endeavour, commencing in October, has the potential to significantly reduce CO2e emissions within the supply chain by approximately 300 tonnes annually. Around 5,000 deliveries will be fuelled by a combination of HVO and diesel, primarily serving the CCEP facility in Wakefield, located in West Yorkshire, UK. Menzies Distribution, one of Ball's logistics partners in the UK, is a crucial supporter of this innovative partnership.
HVO represents a renewable and sustainable alternative fuel. What sets HVO apart is its capacity to substantially reduce the carbon footprint associated with supply chain transportation, spanning from can production to the final product delivery to customers. HVO can function as the primary fuel for vehicles or can be blended with diesel to enhance CO2e emissions without necessitating any modifications to existing engines or additional vehicle maintenance. This versatile fuel can be stored alongside diesel in local tanks, allowing for a seamless blend of the two fuel types throughout the fleet. Such integration can lead to a reduction in CO2e emissions through a strategic blend of HVO and diesel.
In March 2023, Ball unveiled its Climate Transition Plan, a roadmap outlining the company's transformation into a fully circular and decarbonised enterprise, aimed at better serving its stakeholders and benefiting the environment. The introduction of HVO represents a pivotal step in Ball's journey towards achieving its decarbonisation objectives.
Tom McCarthy, Vice President of Integrated Business Planning at Ball Beverage Packaging EMEA, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, "We are delighted to work with Coca-Cola Europacific Partners on such an important project. Tackling emissions from transport is extremely important to us – from production of the can to final delivery stage. Through strong collaboration with our customers and suppliers across the value chain, we are driving towards our sustainability goals."
Francisco Javier Sanchez Gandarias, Vice President of Customer Service and Supply Chain at Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Great Britain, emphasised their commitment to supporting collaboration throughout the supply chain. He stated, "We see it as our responsibility as a leading manufacturer in GB to support collaboration along the supply chain. We're aligned with Ball Beverage Packaging's goals when it comes to reducing emissions from transport, so that, together, we can make a bigger impact when it comes to tackling the climate challenge. We are continuing to encourage all of our third-party partners to transition to lower carbon solutions so we can produce and deliver the drinks people love more sustainably." This collaborative effort underscores the commitment of both companies to reducing their carbon footprint and contributing to a more sustainable future.
