Zemo Partnership Release The Renewable Fuels Guide 2023

The Zemo Partnership has released a new guide tailored to aid operators of heavy-duty vehicles in the UK who are confronting challenges in reducing carbon emissions. The guide's objective is to shed light on the array of guidance and regulations related to emission reduction.

The report emphasises the potential of embracing renewable fuels as a pragmatic solution, especially for operators managing vehicles with extended duty cycles and those burdened with substantial payloads, which currently pose challenges in transitioning to electric power.

Despite the impending ban on selling new non-zero emission Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) by 2040 (and by 2035 for HGVs under 26 tonnes), the comprehensive transition to low-carbon transportation, encompassing HGVs, buses, and coaches, is anticipated to extend beyond the 15-year mark.

Currently, low-carbon renewable fuels contribute a third of all carbon savings in road transport. Over the crucial upcoming decade, integrating lower-carbon fuels within the heavy-duty vehicle fleet represents the most significant opportunity for a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Zemo Partnership's research reveals that introducing an average of 30% renewable fuel (such as high-blend biodiesel, renewable diesel, or biomethane) across the existing HGV fleet could potentially reduce GHG emissions from UK HGVs by an additional 46 million tonnes in the next seven years (by 2030). This would equate to a 4% reduction in GHG emissions from road transport. Importantly, substantial emissions reductions can be achieved both leading up to and well beyond 2040 if the remaining diesel-powered HGV fleet adopts renewable fuels on a wide scale.

As the requirement for businesses in the UK and internationally to disclose GHG emissions becomes mandatory, and with many organisations integrating sustainability performance standards into their tendering processes, the adoption of renewable fuels emerges as a highly practical solution. This is particularly relevant for operators managing vehicles with extended duty cycles and those carrying heavy payloads, for which electrification is currently both challenging and costly.

The guide also provides a list of engine models from manufacturers of heavy-duty vehicles that are approved for use with high-blend biodiesel (e.g., B20, B30) and renewable diesel (e.g., HVO).
