Teeside International Airport Introduce Hydrogen Solutions

Teesside International Airport, located in the north east of the UK, is embarking on an exciting endeavour to embrace hydrogen-powered solutions, thanks to a generous £8 million funding support from the government. This visionary initiative is set to revolutionise the airport's ground-based operations, making significant strides towards achieving Net Zero carbon emissions by the year 2030.

The funding will be allocated to two key players in the hydrogen technology sector: ULEMCo and Element 2. ULEMCo's focus lies in developing hydrogen-powered ground vehicles, specifically targeting aeroplane tow trucks and runway sweepers. These innovative vehicles will play a crucial role in the airport's daily operations, helping to minimize its environmental impact.

Element 2, on the other hand, will utilise the funding to establish four new publicly accessible hydrogen refuelling stations. These stations will be a game-changer, as they will significantly increase the number of hydrogen refuelling facilities in the UK by 50%. This development will pave the way for various vehicles, including airside vehicles and heavy goods vehicles like supermarket delivery trucks, to transition to a cleaner and more sustainable energy carrier.

The UK's Transport Secretary, Mark Harper, expressed enthusiasm for the potential of hydrogen technology to decarbonise transport and contribute to economic growth. He believes that this strategic investment will not only help propel the nation towards a greener future but also stimulate job creation and apprenticeships throughout the north east region.

With this exciting step towards embracing hydrogen-powered solutions, Teesside International Airport is poised to lead by example, demonstrating the viability and environmental benefits of hydrogen as an energy source in the aviation and transportation sectors. The future looks promising as the airport takes a leap towards a more sustainable and eco-friendly aviation landscape.
