Police in Bassetlaw Successfully Reduce Fuel Theft.
A significant drop in fuel theft incidents has been achieved in Bassetlaw, demonstrating an impressive 87% reduction, thanks to a strong crackdown on criminals who had been causing difficulties for both local businesses and residents.
Throughout the month of July, law enforcement officers from Nottinghamshire Police force diligently stepped up their efforts against rural criminals. By carefully analysing intelligence and strategically targeting known problem areas, Bassetlaw experienced a remarkable 87% decline in fuel thefts compared to the previous month.
The Operation Reacher task force carried out multiple operations during the night and early morning hours, yielding substantial results. This proactive approach led to the apprehension of three suspects and the confiscation of over 1,000 litres of suspected stolen fuel.
In collaboration with Neighbourhood Policing Officers and the Road Policing Unit, the Operation Reacher team also successfully confiscated multiple quadbikes, using tactics such as deploying a stinger device to immobilise one quadbike.
Fuel theft not only affects farmers, rural properties, businesses, and motorists, but also involves instances where criminals use weapons to intimidate drivers into surrendering their fuel. Bassetlaw authorities remain committed to combating rural crime and ensuring the safety of local communities.
Inspector Hayley Crawford, the District Commander for Bassetlaw, emphasised the crucial role of enforcement actions and strategic operations in not only apprehending criminals but also disrupting their illicit activities.
Insp Crawford stated, "Fuel theft had been causing difficulties for businesses and residents throughout the northern region of the county. However, through the unwavering determination, diligent efforts, and effective collaboration of not only the Neighbourhood Team but also the Bassetlaw Operation Reacher team, the Roads Policing Unit, intelligence officers, and vigilant members of the public, we have witnessed a substantial reduction in fuel thefts over the past few weeks."
"We have not only confiscated significant amounts of suspected stolen fuel and related equipment, including barrels and siphoning devices, but also seized multiple quadbikes. We value the input of our communities and remain committed to our ongoing engagement. Operations like these are an ongoing commitment; we will persist in our efforts to confront rural criminals and disrupt their unlawful activities."
Insp Crawford further encouraged community involvement: "If you have any information regarding fuel thefts or other criminal activities in your area, we urge you to contact us or provide an anonymous report. Your knowledge can play a crucial role in identifying and apprehending criminals who are negatively impacting our communities."
