Manchester to Build Large Scale Charging Oasis
The city council in Manchester, UK, has granted approval for the construction of Manchester's first large-scale green charging 'oasis' dedicated to electric vehicles (EVs).
The development will feature commercial space to accommodate local businesses and will offer ultra-rapid charging for up to 16 electric vehicles simultaneously. It will include accessible charging spots as well as spaces suitable for vans. Additionally, secure charging facilities will be provided for electric bicycles.
With the site's 16 ultra-rapid chargers, typical EVs can be charged in as little as 10 minutes, significantly faster than the 4-6 hours required by a 7kW fast charger.
Be.EV currently maintains the largest network of public EV chargers in Greater Manchester. The Reliance Street location is the company's inaugural 'Oasis' project of the new generation, with plans for similar sites across the country.
Emphasising environmental considerations, the site's design will incorporate trees and support biodiversity. A natural boundary along one side of the site will be created with a wildflower garden. Throughout the area, various planted spaces will include herbaceous perennials, shrubs, and grasses. The project commits to achieving a 'net-biodiversity uplift' to reintroduce nature to the area.
To enhance the development's carbon footprint, solar panels will be installed to generate clean energy for the operation of the commercial space. The retail building and forecourt roof will feature biodiverse plantings of native British species, carefully selected for the region.
The charging ring will be surrounded by mature trees, contributing to the site's overall design and attracting additional animal and birdlife.
Octopus Energy will provide renewable energy to power the chargers, ensuring a complete transition to a sustainable and environmentally friendly transport system.
