Nike Unveils First Hydrogen Powered Inland Container Ship

Nike, the renowned global clothing brand, has unveiled its ground-breaking achievement with the launch of the world's first hydrogen-powered inland container ship in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Developed by Future Proof Shipping (FPS), the vessel, named H2 Barge 1, has undergone extensive retrofitting, measuring 110m x 11.45m. It has been chartered by BCTN Network on Inland Terminals to serve Nike EMEA.

With the integration of hydrogen fuel cells, the container ship is expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions by up to 2,000 tonnes annually. Its primary purpose is to transport Nike's products between Rotterdam and its European Logistics Campus located in Belgium.

The successful retrofitting of the vessel was made possible through a collaborative effort between FPS, Air Liquide, BCTN, Holland Shipyards Group, Koedood Marine Group, Kooiman Marine Group, Nedstack Fuel Cell Technology, Rabobank, and Nike.

Eb Mukhtar, Vice-President Operations and Logistics at Nike EMEA, expressed Nike's commitment to building a zero carbon, zero waste future. He stated, "We have been dedicated to this journey for decades and are now setting even more ambitious goals for the future." Mukhtar added, "The H2 Barge 1 serves as a significant example of our investment in sustainable progress across logistics and transportation, ensuring the preservation of the environment for generations to come."

The commendable efforts of FPS were acknowledged by Mark Harbers, the Dutch Minister of Infrastructure & Water Management, who awarded Hib van de Grijspaarde, the founder of FPS, with an A-Zero (A0) emission label. Harbers enthusiastically commented, "It is my pleasure to present the very first A-Zero emission label to H2 Barge 1, as it truly qualifies as a zero-emission vessel. This achievement is praiseworthy." He continued, "I hope this milestone accomplished by Future Proof Shipping will encourage other shipowners to transition to emission-free transport, resulting in numerous A-Zero emission labels being awarded in the future."

Richard Klatten, CEO of FPS, described the launch as a pivotal moment not only for Future Proof Shipping but also for the future of the shipping industry. He stated, "This shipping project demonstrates that it is possible to move cargo with zero emissions and zero impact. We hope that it will inspire the industry to follow Nike's lead and embrace a zero-emission approach."
