Wastewater to Hydrogen Project Set to Proceed

A wastewater-to-hydrogen project in Cambridgeshire, UK, is set to proceed this summer (2023), with Element 2 securing the offtake agreement for refuelling purposes.

Element 2, a UK hydrogen infrastructure firm, has announced its intention to purchase hydrogen produced by a new electrolyser at Anglian Water's Milton Road water recycling site in Cambridge and supply it to hydrogen-powered vehicles. The project aims to generate "fuel cell grade" hydrogen and achieve full runtime by July 2023, with an estimated daily production of 91kg of hydrogen. Both companies plan to assess the environmental benefits of the trial.

The initiative forms part of the Triple Carbon Reduction Project, a collaborative effort funded by Ofwat's Water Breakthrough Challenge, aimed at reducing carbon emissions during the water recycling process. In October 2022, Logan Energy, based in Scotland, was selected to install an electrolyser at one of Anglian Water's wastewater treatment plants in Cambridgeshire to explore the use of treated wastewater for hydrogen production.

Element 2 will facilitate the storage and transportation of hydrogen produced at the Anglian site to its network of hydrogen refuelling stations across the UK. This will serve the company's customer base, comprising owners and operators of hydrogen-powered vehicle fleets. Additionally, the hydrogen will support the development of hydrogen engines and be utilized in trials of new fuel cell vehicles.

Guilia Pizzagalli, Innovation Projects Manager at Anglian Water, emphasized the alignment of using a by-product of the process to contribute to vehicle decarbonisation within the Triple Carbon Reduction project's objectives. Brendan Bilton, Chief Technology Officer at Element 2, described the partnership as a significant milestone for hydrogen production using water in the UK and highlighted its potential to accelerate the decarbonisation of trucks and commercial vehicles.

Element 2 is actively collaborating with local suppliers in the UK's hydrogen sector to promote the circular economy, with partnerships like the Anglian Water hydrogen production project. The company aims to establish flexible supply chains as it works towards building a network of hydrogen refuelling stations and solutions in the UK.

As part of its ambitious plans, Element 2 recently received planning permission for two permanent hydrogen refuelling stations at Exelby Services' locations on the A1(M) and M6 motorways in the UK, with aspirations to deploy over 800 hydrogen pumps by 2027.
