Toyota's Zero Emission Powertrain

Toyota has received a zero emission powertrain (ZEP) executive order from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) for its fuel cell electric powertrain, designed for heavy-duty vehicles.

The powertrain kit will include hydrogen fuel storage tanks, fuel cell stacks, batteries, electric motors, and transmission, providing an eco-friendly alternative to traditional diesel powertrains.

The CARB ZEP Executive Order certifies that the powertrain meets CARB regulations for zero-emission powertrains, allowing OEMs using Toyota's powertrain to be eligible for other incentives such as CARBs Hybrid and Zero-Emission Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project (HVIP).

Toyota's Senior Programme Manager Advanced Mobility, Scott Friedman, stated that Toyota aims to reduce or eliminate emissions for all mobility solutions, while Executive Programme Manager Advanced Mobility at Toyota Motor North America, Chris Rovik, emphasized that fuel cell technology is scalable and will play a vital role in reducing carbon emissions as we move towards a hydrogen society.

Toyota's CARB ZEP-certified powertrain kit is now ready for commercialisation, with production set to begin for customers later in 2023 at the Kentucky manufacturing plant.
