Highways Agency to be a Pubically Owned Company

The Highways Agency will be transformed into a publically owned company much like the set-up of National Rail to attempt to become more effective and operate more efficiently.

The government has said that this change could save £600m by 2020/21 if it is put in place alongside other proposals announced on 16th July in the Action for Roads paper. To successfully accomplish this, the Highways Agency, which is a part of the Department for Transport, must move beyond being under the control and influence of ministers and devote its efforts to running the strategic road network. The government has also promised to fund the agency from 2015 to 2021, as there have been previous issues with annual funding as it can be stop start due to political decisions.

The director of policy for the FTA has applauded the announcement by saying “Moving forward it is vital to have a method in place which enables the industry to monitor the new company in its meeting performance.” As well as this, £500m of extra funding will be spent on electric vehicles for by 2020.
