FTA to Tackle Congestion at Dartford Tunnel

The Freight Transport Association (FTA) are planning on tackling the congestion and high capacity issues that affect the Dartford and Blackwall crossing on a daily basis and apparently costs a 44-tonne truck an average of £1 per minute being held up in traffic.

The FTA and the DfT (Department for Transport) are launching a consultation into a new location for another crossing to ease the traffic on the Dartford crossing and have revealed three options. One is the site of the existing A282 Dartford- Thurrock crossing; the second connecting the A1089 at Grays, Essex with the A2 Swanscombe Peninsula; or connecting the A13 and the M2 with the M25 between junctions 29 and 30.

The head of road network management policy for the FTA Malcolm Bingham, said that “Improving capacity and easing congestion at Dartford is essential; but we have to ensure that the best option is selected”. The FTA is encouraging the public who are affected to voice their opinions to enable the new crossing to be placed in the most beneficial place to the public.
