Royal Mail Introducing New Fuel Surcharges

Royal Mail revealed that their high fuel costs for both heavy and commercial vehicles are at an all-time high, forcing Royal Mail to announce a fuel surcharge for the first time.

Some of Royal Mail’s contract parcel services have applied a 2.5 surcharge on top of their normal fees to try to keep up with their competition which is apparently a much lower surcharge in comparison to existing carrier competition. A spokesman for the Royal Mail said “The price of fuel is a major element of parcel delivery costs. Our fuel costs are at a record high, up more than 40% in the past five years and volatility in the price of fuel means that we need a more effective method of reflecting this in our price”.

Competitors such as Yodel operate a surcharge at 0.5% for every 4p spent on fuel, whereas FedEx charge an 18% fuel surcharge across a lot of its services. Many other operators see Royal Mail’s move as a wise one as it “brings them into line with the rest of the industry” said a Hermes spokeswoman.
