Penalties to Increase for Using Phones Whilst Driving

The AA is taking harsher action against drivers who use their mobile phone whilst driving with increased fixed penalty fines.

The fine for using mobile phones whilst driving has always been a concern for the AA and they hope to try to deter drivers from doing it by upping the penalty fine from £60 to £90, along with three penalty points, which hasn’t changed since 2000. According to an AA poll, 74% of drivers see others using mobile phones on most journeys and 25% see someone every time they drive, which has been illegal since 2003.

Only 58% of people claim to have never used a hand held phone whilst driving, but of the 42% of people who have, only 60% of 20,936 drivers said that it has been a distraction, meaning that 40% think that using their phones whilst driving is not distracting. Even 2% of drivers have admitted to using their phones whilst driving to check Facebook and Twitter and to tweet. Edmund King, AA president said: “It is imperative that targeted police enforcement campaigns help to reinforce the message”.
