LGVs Could Be Banned From London

Boris Johnson has proposed a new cyclist protection blueprint that means that LGVs could be banned from parts of London during peak times for safety. This document named ‘The Mayor’s Vision for Cycling in London – An Olympic Legacy for all Londoners’ will be tested in London initially, and if successful, extended to other large cities throughout the UK.

The report outlines policy makers to close loopholes excusing operators from fitting cycle safety technology such as side guards and mirrors on some LGVs. This legislation is to ensure that all CVs in urban areas are given maximum visibility as well as anti-collision technology such as sensors and side cameras. These would be fitted to all new CVs and existing Lorries refitted where possible.

The FTA said that banning Lorries from certain parts of London at any time “would place a burden on hauliers”. Christopher Snelling, head of urban logistics suggested that a better idea would be to remove the restrictions of night time deliveries to help avoid peak hours. Cyclist awareness training has been suggested to become a mandatory part of the Driver CPC qualification as part of the blueprint.
