European Commission Approves Increasing Truck Length for Fuel Efficiency
The newest design to increase the length of trucks to be more fuel efficient and to have a new streamlined design has been given the go ahead by the European Commission last week.
The extra length is said to be specifically for fuel efficiency and aerodynamic enhancement not for extra cargo or weight and it is planned to have a more streamlined design such as reducing rear tails at the end of the trucks, have longer noses to reduce drags and increase the length of the trailers by 15cm as well as the length of the cabs by 80 cm. The European Commission has predicted that the modifications would generate fuel savings of 5% to 8%, so a truck covering 100,000km a year would save around £4,270 on their annual fuel bill. The new design on the cab nose would also have an impact absorbing structure and therefore improve crash test performance and safety.
The EC vice-president Siim Kallas said that “These changes will make road transport cleaner and safer as well as initiating the start of a greener truck for a global market”.
