South Derbyshire's Leap Towards Carbon Neutrality with Hydrogen-Powered Refuse Vehicles

In an era of heightened environmental awareness, municipalities worldwide are racing to reduce their carbon footprints and transition to sustainable practices. South Derbyshire District Council (SDDC) has taken a significant step in this direction with its recent initiative: a six-month trial on two hydrogen dual fuel refuse vehicles, supported by temporary refuelling infrastructure. This project, funded by Innovate UK and Local Enterprise Partnership D2N2, marks a pivotal moment in South Derbyshire's journey towards carbon neutrality by 2030.

The decision to explore hydrogen-powered vehicles stems from a clear commitment by SDDC to tackle carbon emissions across three key areas: renewable energy, transport, and buildings. While electric vehicles have gained traction in urban areas, the rural and elongated operational zone of South Derbyshire posed a challenge for electric refuse collection vehicles. Recognising this obstacle, the council sought alternative solutions and found promise in hydrogen technology.

Collaborating with Toyota Manufacturing UK Ltd and ULEMCo, experts in hydrogen solutions for transport, SDDC embarked on a journey to convert existing diesel vehicles into hydrogen-diesel dual-fuel hybrids. This partnership, facilitated by The Procurement Partnership Limited (TPPL), streamlined the procurement process and enabled the council to access innovative technology efficiently.

Amanda Lyne, Managing Director of ULEMCo, emphasised the importance of TPPL's role in enabling small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to navigate complex procurement processes and implement groundbreaking solutions. The conversion of the refuse trucks to hydrogen dual fuel not only aligns with environmental objectives but also serves as a practical demonstration of hydrogen's potential to transform public sector transport.

Fuel Cell Systems emerged as the preferred hydrogen refuelling supplier, supporting the trial with infrastructure deployment and operational monitoring. Matt Holford, Head of Environmental Services at SDDC, praised TPPL's expertise in facilitating a seamless transition to hydrogen-powered vehicles, underscoring the critical role of tailored operator training and support.

James Brennan, Managing Director of TPPL, expressed pride in supporting SDDC's innovative project, emphasising the potential for trial outcomes to guide other district councils in evaluating hydrogen as a viable fuel source. The collaboration between various stakeholders underscores the collective commitment to decarbonisation and sustainable development.

Tom Chicken, CTO of Fuel Cell Systems, highlighted the importance of vehicle trials in showcasing hydrogen's practicality for commercial fleets. The modular and scalable nature of hydrogen refuelling products offers councils across the UK the flexibility to experiment before making substantial investments, further facilitated by TPPL's support.

The trial's success hinges on not only technological performance but also public perception and procurement challenges. By documenting and disseminating the lessons learned through a comprehensive 'playbook,' SDDC aims to empower other councils to replicate and scale similar initiatives, accelerating the transition to clean energy solutions.

The support from Local Enterprise Partnership D2N2 underscores the broader commitment to regional economic growth and productivity. As one of 38 Local Enterprise Partnerships in England, D2N2's ambition to improve the Derbyshire economy aligns seamlessly with SDDC's goals of fostering sustainable development and enhancing residents' quality of life.
