Carbon Footprint Affecting Used Car Choices

The importance of CO2 emissions is now becoming an increasingly important factor for customers purchasing a used car; it has been reported by car dealers.

Vehicle information firm HPI found that 77% of dealers said that there is a greater awareness of CO2 emissions among customers looking for a used car that frequently affects a customer’s choice to purchase a certain car, which is being put down to lower tax benefits and lower running costs are portraying ‘going green’ as more beneficial.

Some car dealers say that they rarely have CO2 certificates for the stock they keep (15%) and 28% say they never obtain the documents. The dealers that do have the CO2 certificates display it and 61% say that it enhances the sales process. Daniel Burgess, Managing Director of HPI who provides dealers with the Environmental Sheet indicating CO2 levels said “It’s clear to see that CO2 now has more of an impact on a customer’s purchase decision, but many dealers are missing a trick by not offering this data, or only doing so when prompted”.
