Boss Setting Up Crashes for Insurance Imprisoned
A recovery firm boss in Durham has been imprisoned for seven years after being caught running a cash for crash scams. The scam has been described by Judge Roger Thorn as “one of the most prolific” scams to date.
The boss Paul Jonathan Wright, who ran PJ Autos in Craghead, attempted to defraud insurers out of almost £3m over two years. The firm was used to recover and then store vehicles used for staged collisions, including fictitious crashes that had never happened as well as genuine crashes that had been largely exaggerated. These fraud scams were so extreme that it appears as though £100 has been added to each individual’s insurance premium in Derwentside in County Durham. Wright was arrested alongside 70 others involved.
The director of the Insurance Fraud Bureau (IFB) said that “Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident. The IFB is currently investigating 49 organised fraud rings across the UK, with the combined value of those scams totalling £66m”.
